HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Wiley Elementary hosted over 40 educators from area districts on Thursday, January 26, 2023, for collaborative learning over the Leader In Me curriculum.
Leader in Me is an evidence-based, comprehensive model that builds leadership and life skills in students, creates a high-trust school culture, and lays the foundation for sustained academic achievement. Several schools within the USD 308 district have adopted the Leader In Me curriculum as a way to help students develop leadership skills throughout their educational journeys.
Each year, a Leader In Me Community Coaching Day is held during the Fall and Spring, and Wiley Elementary was chosen to host this Spring’s event. The day is spent collaborating with educators from across the South Central Kansas area on ways to implement the Leader In Me curriculum and get students involved in the process.
During their time at Wiley Elementary, visitors had the opportunity to take a tour of the school led by the Student Lighthouse team, comprised of Kindergarten through 6th graders at Wiley. The rest of the day was spent learning through activities and collaboration.
At the end of the day, Wiley students opened their Mini Sweet Treat for visitors, showcasing a Leader In Me initiative at their school.
“It’s an opportunity to come together for professional development on Leader In Me, and an opportunity for us to showcase our journey here at Wiley and show what leadership looks like in our school,” said Lynette McLean, principal at Wiley Elementary.
“We talked about what it is that your school needs and wants, and it’s customizable to each school. You can really look at the goals and targets you want to accomplish as a school. To be able to have that time to empower others, not only your staff, but others across the state, and to be able to learn from each other was very exciting.” said Sheena Wyatt, Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Reading Specialist for USD 308.
