HUTCHINSON, KAN. — The USD 308 Board of Education met Monday, August 14, 2023. On the agenda was an update from Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Sheila Berridge, and a budget process update from Assistant Superintendent of Finance, Sheila Meggers.
Berridge presented on the Visible Learning professional development conducted at two sites over two days across the district last week. One site hosted a group of elementary teachers, and another site hosted secondary teachers. Visible Learning is a new program to the Hutchinson district as of this year. It engages teachers to assess their own teaching methods to ensure the strategies they are using in the classroom are what works best. By learning the program’s “10 Mindframes”, teachers can lean into a research-based curriculum that engages both the student and teacher. As teachers put Visible Learning into practice for the first time this school year, students will see benefits from self-assessment, tailored feedback, and instructional coaching.
Sheila Meggers, Assistant Superintendent of Finance, presented building needs assessments conducted during the last school year. Each attendance center was evaluated in compliance with Senate substitute for HB2567 Sec 12. Information from the building assessments will be published on the school website and used when approving the district budget to ensure resources are targeted effectively to maximize student academic performance.
Meggers and Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson reviewed the budget with the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) on August 2nd in Topeka. The Board will hear the full budget on August 28th. The Revenue Neutral Rate hearing will be held on Sept 11th . The budget will be submitted to KSDE on September 20. October 1st is the anticipated date for the district to certify budget documents with the Reno County Clerk.
