USD 308 BOARD OF EDUCATION HOLDS SPECIAL MEETING, SUPPORTS FUTURE BOND VOTE

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Public Schools USD 308 Board of Education held a special meeting tonight, Monday, May 13th at 6:00pm, held at the Midtown Center. Facilities Steering Committee Co-chairs, Kari Mailloux and Jordan Fee presented with Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson assisting. The Committee, convened over 15 months ago, has met monthly to address building and maintenance issues in order to develop a facilities master plan.

During their meetings, they explored issues ranging from buildings to transitions to culture and more. Their initial objective—a District Facilities Plan—became a conversation around a bond that would meet the current and future needs and desires of the USD 308 community. The current facilities status was analyzed, areas for improvement were identified, and concepts were developed to present In April 2024, dozens of community meetings were held to present committee findings and gain valuable feedback.

After hearing the presentation and discussing the topic for over an hour, the Board passed a motion to proceed with a bond issue not to exceed $110 million to address a middle school, early education center, and other inequities in the buildings. The motion, made by Tad Dower, passed 6-1. Cheryl Thompson was the dissenting vote.
