HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The USD 308 Board of Education voted to approve the combining of Lincoln Elementary with McCandless Elementary at the special meeting on Monday (May 15, 2023).
During the special meeting on Monday, parents, guardians, and taxpayers of USD 308 had the opportunity to address the board on matters related to the proposed solutions to the teacher shortage in the district.
After hearing from the public, USD 308 superintendent, Dr. Dawn Johnson, gave a presentation to the board on the proposed solutions and provided a recommendation based on the data gathered by district leaders. Dr. Johnson addressed the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed plans.
The final recommended solution was that Lincoln and McCandless Elementary combine boundaries and make McCandless Elementary the attendance center. The proposed solution would also reverse the Graber boundary back to the 2022-2023 boundary.
“We are building towards excellence, and we know this is not an easy decision, but I think we have worked hard to look at all of the options and choose the best recommendation,” said Dr. Johnson.
The principal of Lincoln Elementary, Paul Carver, also had the opportunity to address the board and speak to the concerns addressed by the community and supported the recommendation made by Dr. Johnson.
After asking clarifying questions of Dr. Johnson, Krystal Young, Deputy Superintendent, and Mr. Carver, the board voted to approve the recommendation, which will take effect for the 2023-2024 school year.
