Artist INC Express
Saturday, November 4th and Sunday, November 5th, from Noon to 5:00 PM

Attention artists, writers, musicians, and performers in Central Kansas! The Hutchinson Art Center is excited to partner with Hutch Rec and host Artist INC Express, a career development program of Mid-America Arts Alliance, designed to help artists, of any discipline, develop the building blocks for a thriving and enduring arts practice.

This 2-day workshop is FREE and will take place on Saturday, November 4th and Sunday, November 5th from noon to 5:00 PM each day at the Hutchinson Art Center. Led by a team of experienced, working artists, Artist INC Express is a nine-hour, hands-on workshop that helps artists address specific needs and challenges that artists face throughout their careers. Through discussions, activities, and hands-on exercises, artist-facilitators, and a new network of peer artists, will help participating artists set goals for their practice, write about their work, and build a personal brand.

ARTIST OPPORTUNITIES:

Owl Art, Hutch Art CenterMonthly Children’s Art Projects: November – Owls
Saturday, November 18th, from 1:00 – 2:30 PM and 3:00 – 4:30 PM

Join us for this month’s make-and-take art projects for children on November 18th at the Hutchinson Art Center. This is an opportunity for children aged 6
through 12 to create their own work of art! Students will be divided into two groups: Group A and Group B, with each group covering different skills. Each
group art class costs $8 per child.

November’s theme is Owls!

Group A will paint a simplified owl scene. We’ll learn about abstraction in art, pattern, texture, muted colors, using a dry brush to create texture, using transparent paint, and off-setting your subject. If time permits, we’ll also make a colorful owl using wax resist and watercolor.

Group B will paint a more realistic owl in a tree. We’ll learn about natural frames, movement, abstraction in art, pattern, texture, and using analogous colors. If time permits, we’ll also make a colorful owl using wax resist and watercolor.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to sign up their child for either Group A or Group B depending on skill level and interest. In general, the Group A project is simpler and aimed toward children aged 6-7, while the Group B project is a bit more complex and is aimed toward children aged 8-12.

**Group A will meet 1:00 to 2:30 PM and Group B will meet 3:00 to 4:30 PM on Saturday, November 18th**

Learn more about these classes and register your child by visiting our website at https://www.hutchinsonartcenter.net/monthly-childrens-art-projects. **Hurry! Registration is limited to 15 students/group per month.**

Friday Morning Artists
November 3rd, 10th, and 17th, from 9:00 to 11:30 AM

Do you want to improve your figure drawing skills in a judgment-free space? Our Friday morning art sessions are for you! Attendees are welcome to arrive anytime between 9:00 and 11:00 AM – all you need is $8.00 and your own art supplies. Artists are responsible for bringing their own art supplies, none will be provided by the Hutchinson Art Center.

*Sessions can be canceled during holidays or special occasions, so if in doubt, call ahead to check the
schedule at (620) 663-1081.

CURRENT EXHIBITS:

Ceramic Sculptures by Sandra KellerFRONT GALLERY: Ceramic Sculptures by Sandra Keller
On display from October 19th – November 15th

The Hutchinson Art Center is pleased to feature the ceramic sculptures of Hutchinson artist Sandra Keller in our Front Gallery from mid-October into November.
“(In the) Smoky Valley in Central Kansas as a child sitting barefoot in my father’s freshly plowed furrows, I loved the smell of the earth and the feel and glow of the dark brown gloss of the soil cast in the sunlight.

Learning to be resourceful from my mother was the road which led to my creativity. She taught me the art of creating something from nothing. I studied clay in high school where my art teacher, Richard Luster, first influenced me to become a clay artist.

I have attended clay workshops and studied clay with some of the best clay artists in the country: Gordon Zahradnik, Ray Kahmeyer (Kansas Artists) and Warren McKenzie, Phillipe Faraut, Lincoln Fox, Walt Horton, and Bruno Lucchesi, all nationally recognized for their outstanding sculpture. I also studied sculpture at Hutchinson Community College and the Wichita Center for the Arts.” – Sandra Keller

This exhibition is on display in our Front Gallery now through November 15th.

MAIN GALLERY: The Society of Layerists in Multi-Media (SLMM)
On display from October 20th – November 18th

The Hutchinson Art Center is currently featuring artist’s works from the Society of Layerists in Multi-Media (SLMM) through November 18th.

Twenty-six members of this group are exhibiting 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional works in our Main Gallery. SLMM’s members come from Kansas and the surrounding states, including Nebraska, Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, and Colorado. The Society of Layerists was founded in 1982 to serve as a network for artists and other persons interested in a holistic perspective. Mary Carroll Nelson, founder of SLMM, observes that, “Layerists have developed a perspective related to the time/space continuum. In layered art, many events connect at a single point in space; and many points in space are linked at a single moment in time.”

This exhibition is on display in our Main Gallery now through November 18th.

FRONT GALLERY: TECH Client Art
On display from November 20th – December 23rd

The Hutchinson Art Center is excited to feature the work of artists from the TECH Art Program in our Front Gallery from late November into December.

Based in Hutchinson, Kansas, TECH provides services and programs to help adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Reno County to live the fullest lives possible. Additionally, they provide service coordination to families with children who have intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The TECH Art Program is an invaluable part of service offerings here at TECH and allows an opportunity for the people we serve to explore their creative talents.

“TECH, Inc. is thrilled to be celebrating 50 years of serving the Hutchinson community! As we reflect on this journey, we can’t help but acknowledge the incredible evolution of the TECH Art Program and the extraordinary progress our TECH artists have made! The all-hands-on-deck approach and unwavering support from the TECH Board and our beloved community are what has made the TECH Art Program what it is today. What started as arts and crafts projects in the early years of TECH has evolved into painted silk scarves and ties, which still hold a special place in our collection. However, the TECH artists have expanded into other mediums, and it’s the original paintings and prints that are the most popular items these days. The journey from where we started to where we stand today is a testament to the dedication of our artists and the steadfast support of our community. Here’s to celebrating 50 years of creativity and innovation!” -Tasha Miller, TECH Art Gallery Coordinator

This exhibition will be on display in our Front Gallery from November 20 to December 23, 2023.
