HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Several intersections on the east side of Hutchinson were closed Thursday morning after a train caught fire.
According to the Hutchinson Fire Department, the engine on the lead locomotive of a Union Pacific train caught fire near 8th and Keast. Engineers with the locomotive were able to extinguish the fire before fire crews arrived.
Engine oil was noted leaking from the locomotive, which led to a Haz-mat team being brought in to put a catch basin under the leak to limit ground contamination.
The fire closed Union Pacific railroad crossings from Lorraine north to 6th streets, all on the east side of K-61.
