Suspect Arrested in Friday Stabbing

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Attempted second degree murder charges are pending against a 41-year-old Hutchinson man in connection with a late Friday afternoon stabbing on the west edge of Hutchinson.

Hutchinson Police Captain Dayton Gates said officers were called just before 5 p.m. Friday to the 1300 block of North Arthur. On arrival a woman was found with life threatening injuries.

She was taken first to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and later to a Wichita hospital where at last word she was in serious but stable condition.

A suspect was identified, and Joseph Castorena was arrested at around 3 a.m. Saturday. In addition to the attempted murder charge Castorena was also arrested for sexual battery and on a parole violation.

He’s being held in the Reno County Jail on a just over $500,000 bond. Castorena is expected to make his initial court appearance Monday.
