HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Strataca, Hutchinson’s underground salt museum, is currently pursuing an affiliation with the Smithsonian in Washington. Strataca Director Rachel Terry told the Hutchinson City Council about this at Tuesday night’s meeting.

Terry said this would be a prestigious recognition that would elevate the museum’s status and bring more opportunities to the community. “Can you just imagine what that would do for tourism, having two world class Smithsonian affiliate museums here in Hutchinson, Kansas,” she told the Council.

The Cosmosphere is already a Smithsonian affiliate.

Terry said as part of the process they are seeking recommendation letters from local residents and community leaders who believe in their mission and the value they bring to the community. If you would like to submit a letter of support, those can be sent to rachel@underkansas.org.

Strataca has seen tremendous growth over the past year since she became director and continues to build upon that. This summer, they will be launching a new virtual reality exhibit, offering a groundbreaking way to experience the history and wonders of our underground world., which Terry said will not only enhance their educational offerings, but also position Strataca as a leader in museum technology.
