McPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — A Newton man died late Monday night in a one vehicle crash southeast of McPherson that led to about a two-hour closure of K-61 just west of the I-135 interchange.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a pickup driven by Sam Dial was northbound on 16th Avenue, which dead ends at 61 and becomes Centennial Drive north of the highway, shortly after 11 PM when he went past the end of the road and hit the dead-end guardrail and a culvert before coming to rest.
Dial was pronounced dead at the scene.
Eastbound traffic was blocked on 61 as emergency crews worked the accident, those lanes not re-opening until a little after 1:30 Tuesday morning.
