McPHERSON, Kan. — A seven-year-old student at McPherson’s Roosevelt Elementary School is in stable condition at a Wichita hospital after being shot in the arm with an arrow this morning on the school’s playground, with the person who shot the arrow in custody.
McPherson Police Chief Mikel Golden said in a statement, offices along with EMS and Fire Rescue were called to the school at 9:46 a.m. After initial medical assistance the student was first taken to McPherson Center for Health before being transferred to Wesley Medical Center.
A 31-year-old man was shooting a bow and arrow in the area of the school, and it was an errant shot that struck the student. He was arrested on requested charges of aggravated battery and aggravated child endangerment and booked into the McPherson County Jail on a $12,500 bond. A later update from McPherson County Jail online records indicates that a male with charges matching the reported suspect’s posted a $30,000 bond and was released at 5:12 p.m.
The McPherson Police Department reminds McPherson City residents, it is unlawful to operate an air rifle, bow and arrow, slingshot, BB gun, within the city, except within the confines of a building or structure from which the projectiles cannot escape.
