HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) announced today that it has received an AmeriCorps Seniors grant from AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism. The grant will expand RSVP’s presence in Reno County, KS where the organization has been providing volunteer services since 1973.

With this new funding, RSVP will leverage the skills and experience of AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers in Reno County to bring new solutions to build a healthier, stronger community. These AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP volunteers will be helping organizations increase their capacity to provide services to the community through nutrition and food support, providing companionship to the elderly, mentoring and reading with school age children, providing free tax preparation services and more. The program also enables adults over the age of 55 to contribute to the community using their skills and life experience.

AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism, provides opportunities for Americans to serve their country domestically, address the nation’s most pressing challenges, improve lives and communities, and strengthen civic engagement. Each year, the agency places more than 200,000 AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers in intensive service roles; and empowers millions to serve as long-term, short-term or one-time volunteers.

RSVP is a program of The Volunteer Center and is sponsored by Hutchinson Community College. Prospective volunteers can call 620-665-4960, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. or email volunteercenter@hutchcc.edu to learn more about volunteer opportunities in Reno County.
