HUTCHINSON, Kan. — During this year’s Kansas State Fair counties around the state were invited to create a tabletop scarecrow. The scarecrows were displayed during the fair in the Pride of Kansas Building, and the winning scarecrow came from Marion County.
Each entry had to represent something about their county, and Marion County Clerk Tina Spencer said they incorporated a number of items about the county, built around a photo of the Marion County Courthouse on which they added in a working clock where the courthouse clock is on the photo.
It also included representations of the communities in Marion County, some of the agricultural products grown there, and the scarecrow was designed to honor Father Emil Kapaun, the Korean War era chaplain and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient who grew up in Marion County.
For winning the contest, the Marion County Clerk’s Office received a 100 dollar donation which will be given to a local food bank.
