LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Kentucky jury has convicted a man who ran down four members of a Nickerson Family in July 2022, killing one and critically injuring two others.
A Jefferson County, (Ky) jury deliberated less than two hours before finding Michael Hurley guilty Monday of murder in the death of Trey Jones, three counts of assault involving his wife Amy, daughter Ava and son Creek, and driving under the influence.
The Jones family was run over as they were walking down a sidewalk in downtown Louisville, KY, where Ava was participating in a summer basketball tournament.
Closing arguments were presented Monday morning after testimony concluded Friday, and prosecutors said blood tests showed Hurley has “deadly” amounts of Fentanyl in his system. Amy and Ava Jones testified during the trial that began on Oct. 7. Both received critical injuries in the incident and shared the struggles they have faced since.
Ava Jones took a medical retirement from the University of Iowa earlier this year, which she had committed to prior to the crash, due to the extent of injuries she received. The university is honoring her scholarship.
Sentencing will be set at a later date.
