Lyons School Bus Involved in Injury Crash Near Salina

A bus carrying members of the Lyons High School girls basketball team was involved in a Tuesday afternoon crash near Salina as they were heading to Minneapolis for a basketball game. The Kansas Highway Patrol reports the crash involving the USD 405 bus and a passenger vehicle occurred at 3:55PM just north of the I-70/I-135/US-81 interchange.

A car driven by Marvin Steenbock of Longford had merged onto northbound US 81 from westbound I-70, and turned left in front of the school bus, causing it to hit a guardrail and come to rest in the center median. Steenbock’s car came to rest across the center median and left shoulder.

Steenbock was taken to Salina Regional Health Center, and with what was reported as serious but not life-threatening injuries. There were 23 people in the bus, with driver Lelisa Gilbert of Chase and passengers Hayden Linden and Sofia Pizarro also taken to Salina Regional with reported minor injuries.

The girls’ basketball game was cancelled due to the crash, though the boys’ game between Lyons and Minneapolis was played.
