Little River High School Celebrates First Rudd Scholar Jailyn Millar

LITTLE RIVER, Kan. — The Rudd Foundation surprised its first Little River High School Scholar during an all-school assembly on Monday, Feb. 24.

Senior Jailyn Millar was 1 of 50 students selected for the Rudd Scholarship this year and among 75 finalists interviewed from over 700 scholarship applicants.

Millar received a $100,000 scholarship and full-ride to Wichita State University from the Rudd Foundation on Monday.

Students named as Rudd Scholars earn a “last dollar” scholarship, which pays every last dollar of the students’ college tuition, room and board, books, and materials related to completing their major.

“Our committee selects students not based on what they lack, but what they possess in terms of hard work, grit, determination, and character,” the Foundation states. “That is why we aren’t looking for the brightest or busiest. We are searching for students who persevere. The ones who, though they get knocked down, get right back up. Those who will strive harder than everyone else and continue to meet their challenges head on. Potential scholars possess traits like fortitude, tenacity, ambition, and resolve.”

Not only does the Rudd Scholar get a full-ride scholarship through the program, but also personal and professional development summits, advising and training; networking opportunities, and scholar-to-scholar mentoring.

To qualify for the Rudd Scholarship, students:

  • Must be a graduating high school senior who plans to enroll full-time in the fall.
  • Must have a cumulative, unweighted high school GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Demonstrate financial need (Pell-eligible).
  • Will attend either Emporia State, Fort Hays State, Kansas State, or Wichita State University.
  • Must be a Kansas resident and qualify for in-state tuition.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or a permanent resident.

Founded by Leslie Rudd of Wichita, Kan., the Rudd Foundation was established to reward promising students who embody fundamental principles of success he learned growing up in Wichita. If there’s one thing Leslie Rudd believed in, it was that hard work and determination pay off.
