RICE COUNTY, Kan. — Tim Birzer, former owner of Birzer Funeral Homes, will present a history of funeral homes in Rice County, dating back to the late 1870s. Tim retired in October of 2017 from his full-time position as a funeral director and embalmer after 38 years of service. He continues to work on an at-need basis, helping with funeral services and pre-arrangement consultations.
During his retirement years, Tim started collecting information about former Rice County funeral homes and their owners. He interviewed numerous owners of funeral homes in order to get oral histories about them and their relatives. The research has been timely because some of the interviewees have passed away. Now, their information is recorded for posterity.
The Coronado Quivira Museum is located at 105 West Lyon, Lyons, Kansas. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. For additional information call (620) 257-3941 or go to www.cqmuseum.org.
