BUHLER, Kan. — With a severe snow and ice storm predicted to hit our area starting Saturday, Jan. 4 through Sunday, Jan. 5, IdeaTek urges customers to take precautions to ensure their internet service remains uninterrupted and, most importantly, to stay safe.
Ice and snow accumulation on trees can cause branches to break and fall, potentially damaging overhead power lines and fiber optic cables. This can lead to power outages and internet disruptions.
To help prevent service interruptions and ensure your safety:
- Keep trees trimmed: Regularly inspect and trim trees near your property that could come into contact with overhead lines.
- Report downed lines: If you see a downed power line or fiber-optic cable, do not approach it — assume the line is deadly. Report powerline emergencies to 911 and the local power company. Downed fiber lines should be reported to IdeaTek at 620-543-5555 or email [email protected].
- Prepare for potential outages: Have a backup plan in place for communication and entertainment in case of a service disruption. Charge your mobile devices, fuel your vehicle and consider having alternative power sources available.
- Stay off the roads when possible: Ice and snow-covered roads create dangerous travel. When determining if travel is necessary for these conditions, consider that stalled or wrecked vehicles cause extra strain on important emergency services and personnel needed for other emergencies.
- Stay safe at home: Watch out for slick sidewalks, never use generators indoors, and consider preparations for family and friends with mobility issues.
IdeaTek is actively monitoring the situation and has teams on standby to respond to any issues that arise. Your safety and connectivity are our top priorities. IdeaTek crews will be working diligently throughout the storm to restore any service interruptions as quickly and safely as possible.
