CENTRAL PLAINS, Kan. — By a two to one margin, voters in Central Plains USD 112 Tuesday rejected a proposal to dissolve the district.

Unofficial vote totals from Ellsworth County Clerk Shelly Vopat indicated 1,179 votes were cast against the proposal to 587 in favor. Vopat oversaw the election because headquarters of the district, which covers parts of Barton, Ellsworth, Lincoln, Rice and Russell Counties, is in Ellsworth County.

While Wilson voters voted nearly 95 percent in favor of dissolution, 97 percent of Barton County voters and 89 percent of Rice County voters voted against the proposal. The remainder of the district voted 71 percent against dissolving the district.

Wilson area residents successfully petitioned to put the dissolution question on the ballot after the Central Plains USD 112 Board of Education voted earlier this year to close Wilson Junior-Senior High School.

Official totals will come following the vote canvass next week.
