ANDERSON COUNTY, Kan. — During the recent cold snap, Anderson County Fire and Emergency Management, along with Anderson County EMS, responded to a request for assistance from a local early learning and childcare service experiencing a loss of heat. The emergency call came in as temperatures inside the building dropped, putting the comfort and safety of the children and staff at risk.

Anderson County Fire and Emergency Management maintains a supply of portable heating units purchased with funds from the North East Kansas Health Care Coalition. These units are part of the county’s emergency preparedness efforts to aid in situations like this. Upon receiving the request for help, personnel worked closely with the leadership of the childcare service to develop a deployment plan for the emergency heat units.

During the response, leadership from the childcare center informed responders that the building’s heating system had been restored, and as a result, the emergency heat request was canceled. This positive development highlighted the quick coordination between local responders and the center’s leadership, which allowed the situation to be resolved quickly and efficiently.

The Southeast Kansas Multi-County Health Department also was part of the response, which underscores the importance of local organizations being involved in regional working groups, allowing access to valuable assets and knowledge during emergency situations.
