HAVEN, Kan. (Jan. 27, 2025) — Ad Astra Radio is proud to announce Tommie Westfahl, Haven Grade School Fourth Grade teacher, as the most recent recipient of the Classroom Hero Award presented by Heartland Credit Union.

Each month, Ad Astra Radio honors a different educator, selected from community nominations, to receive the Classroom Hero Award, along with a “hero” gift basket, courtesy of community partners Heartland Credit Union, Midway Motors of Hutchinson, Stutzman’s Greenhouse, Hutch Putt and The Foto Cowboy.

This is Mrs. Westfahl’s first year teaching at Haven Grade School. She has been a teacher for four years overall and started out in Hutchinson.

Westfahl earned her teaching degree at Newman University.

“It was something I always wanted to do,” Westfahl said about her reason for becoming a teacher. “My grandmother was a teacher, and I thought this was where I needed to be.”

Making connections with the kids is Mrs. Westfahl’s favorite part when it comes to teaching.

Outside of the classroom Mrs. Westfahl’s hobby is being the mother of four girls and spending time with them.

Westfahl was described in a nomination as being a hard worker who helps her students achieve their goals.

During the summer, she also helps on the family custom harvest crew with her husband Paul.

The Classroom Hero Award seeks to highlight the hard work and dedication of those on the front lines of our local schools. Nominations can be submitted at https://www.adastraradio.com/classroom-hero.
