LANGDON, Kan. — Ad Astra Radio is proud to announce the most recent Classroom Hero presented by Heartland Credit Union to Fairfield High School math teacher Brenda Unruh.
Each month, Ad Astra Radio honors a different educator, selected from community nominations, to receive the Classroom Hero Award, along with a “hero” gift basket, courtesy of community partners Heartland Credit Union, Midway Motors of Hutchinson, Stutzman’s Greenhouse, Hutch Putt and The Foto Cowboy.
Mrs. Unruh has been teaching at Fairfield High School for 33 years. Not only is the school special to her because she has spent many years educating students there, and some of those students are also staff alongside her, but it is also her alma mater as well.
After graduating from Fairfield High School, Mrs. Unruh continued her education at Sterling College where she obtained her teaching degree.
“I enjoyed sports. That’s kind of why I thought, well if I want to coach and continue that I probably need to go into education, but then the education part really took hold,” Unruh said.
Mrs. Unruh added that she had a really good high school math teacher who inspired her to do well. Ever since then, Unruh has taught math and has enjoyed it greatly.
Alongside being a math teacher, Mrs. Unruh was also a basketball and volleyball coach for 17 years. She now continues to stay involved with the students’ sporting events by doing the scoreboard or stats for home ballgames.
A nominator shared that Mrs. Unruh goes above and beyond to support the students, patiently explaining difficult concepts and encouraging their growth. They also said that Mrs. Unruh fosters a positive and engaging learning environment.
“Their passion for teaching and genuine care for our success inspire us to strive for our best, making a lasting impact on our education and lives.”
In the summer, when she isn’t teaching, Mrs. Unruh keeps busy farming, on the very farm she grew up on.
“It’s a good combination for me,” she said.
The Classroom Hero Award seeks to highlight the hard work and dedication of those on the front lines of our local schools. Nominations can be submitted at https://www.adastraradio.com/classroom-hero.
