NEWTON, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Transportation announced a $16.6 million project to replace the Southeast 36th Street bridge over I-135 at Newton, which is set to begin on Monday, Aug. 12.

The project will provide a wider bridge, with two lanes and a turn lane as well as a sidewalk and KDOT expects it to be completed by Nov. 1, 2025.

Drivers traveling on I-135 should prepare to slow down for construction during the work time. Traffic will be maintained on 36th Street through the work zone and access to businesses along 36th Street may be altered to allow construction operations.

The primary contractor for the project is Pearson Construction, of Wichita, for $16,534,022.
