HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The snow that has fallen across Kansas the last couple of days has led to several high school athletics postponements, including at Hutchinson High.
The Salthawks’ basketball games Tuesday against Maize were postponed, as was the boys’ home swim meet.
The basketball games will be split up during the upcoming tournament weeks. The girls game will be played at 7:15 p.m. on Jan. 18, while the boys will take on Maize at 7:15 p.m. on Jan. 26. Both games will be at the Salthawk Activity Center.
The boys swim meet has been rescheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 26 at the Hutchinson YMCA.
Boys basketball – After dropping their first game of the season on Saturday against Maize South 64-37, the Salthawks dropped to 5-1 and to No. 5 in Class 5A in the first KBCA rankings of 2024.
The Salthawks also learned their draw at next week’s McPherson Invitational. The Salthawks will take on St. James Academy at 4:35 p.m. on Jan. 18. The Salthawks will then either play at 3 p.m. or 6:10 p.m. on Jan. 19 against either Topeka Seaman or Blue Valley.
Hutchinson is next scheduled to play Friday at Great Bend.
Girls basketball – Hutchinson dropped its second game of the season Saturday to Maize South, 47-30. The Salthawks fell out of the Class 5A rankings. They will travel Friday to Great Bend.
Boys wrestling – The Salthawks came in 10th place Saturday at the Dodge City Invitational, scoring 60 points in the 16-team event.
Three Salthawks finished in the top four in their respective weight classes. Camden Jensen (285) and Kade Smith (157) took third, while Cruz Cannon was fourth (106).
Smith, ranked No. 1 in his weight class in 5A, cruised into the semifinals, where he was stopped with a 6-1 loss to Bronson Baxter of Dumas, Texas. Smith came back to beat Ender Rider from Olathe East 5-3 in the third-place match.
Jensen also rolled into the semifinals before dropping a tough 1-0 decision to Hoxie’s Gavin Schippers. Jensen then pinned Manhattan’s Andrew Kennedy in 19 seconds in the third-place match.
Cannon was barely challenged in his first three matches before dropping the final two.
Girls wrestling – The Salthawks finished ninth out of 16 teams with 65 points at the Dodge City Invitational.
Miranda Sanders (140 pounds) led the Salthawks with a fourth-place finish. Sanders won her first three matches by pin, including two in less than a minute.
Bowling – Both the Hutchinson boys and girls competed in the Bishop Carrol Baker on Saturday at Northrock Lanes in Wichita. The boys team came in 13th out of 36 teams with a score of 2,234. The girls came in 17th out of 35 teams, finishing with a score of 1,468.
