RENO COUNTY, Kan. — Reno County is now on record as opposing a January 2021 executive order by President Joe Biden directing development of a program to conserve at least 30 percent of the lands and waters in the United States as part of a broader agenda to address climate change commonly referred to as 30 X 30 program.

A resolution opposing 30 X 30 was approved by County Commissioners at Wednesday’s meeting. The plan has come under fire from a number of sectors, especially in rural areas of the United States, as nothing more than a land grab that would negatively impact these communities.

The resolution, which County Counselor Patrick Hoffman worded to avoid some of the more incendiary language of resolutions other Kansas counties have adopted, states there is no constitutional or statutory authority for the President or any federal agency to take that move. It specifically opposes any program requiring involuntary landowner participation including programs involving historical trails. The Reno County Republican Central Committee at a meeting last week also went on record as opposing 30 X 30.
