Bullpups Sweep Winfield, Split vs. Bishop Miege in Wild Weekend of Basketball

McPHERSON, Kan. – The Bullpups basketball squads played against Winfield at home on Friday, Dec. 15 and at the 810 Varsity Showcase Saturday vs. Bishop Miege, with both teams winning vs. the Vikings and splitting vs. the Stags.

FRIDAY:

GIRLS: McPherson 54, Winfield 25

The McPherson girls started the weekend with an offensive onslaught in the first quarter, scoring 32 first-quarter points and getting the 29-point win. Karter Alvord led with 13 points, Jayla McLeod had 11, and Jaela Thompson added 10 points.

BOYS: McPherson 74, Winfield 48

In the boys matchup, the Bullpups started off strong with multiple high-flying dunks and perimeter shots en route to their 26-point victory. Kyden Thompson led with 21 points, Cory Muehler had 18 and Gabe Pyle finished with 12.

 

SATURDAY:

GIRLS: McPherson 46, Bishop Miege 50.

Despite trailing 15-6 in the first quarter, the Bullpups fought back to take the lead in the 3rd quarter. However, Bishop Miege prevailed following multiple clutch shots, winning 50-46. Jayla McLeod, Karter Alvord and Jaela Thompson all led with 10 points. Ellie Bower came off the bench and scored a season-high 8 points.

BOYS: McPherson 61, Bishop Miege 47

McPherson had a strong start to the game, leading by as much as 8 in the first quarter, but Bishop Miege fought back to close the gap to two points in the 3rd quarter, thanks to a hot game by Howard Peoples. In the final minutes, the Bullpups would convert multiple times offensively and defensively, winning by their largest lead of the game (14 points). Gabe Pyle had an electric second half, finishing with 20 points. Cory Muehler added 13 points and Kyden Thompson had 12.

The McPherson girls are now 4-2, the boys are 6-0. Both teams will take time off for winter break before being back in action on Friday, Jan. 5, 2024 at Circle High School.
