LINDSBORG, Kan. — The Lindsborg Public Safety Department, which includes police, fire, and EMS, was recently awarded a $163,000 grant for its public safety building renovation project. The Thriving Rural Grant was announced on Nov. 17 by the Patterson Family Foundation, and it will be applied to the overall cost of the renovation project, which began in early November.

“We’re so excited and extremely grateful to receive this grant,” said Lindsborg Police Chief Mike Davis. “This project will make the work of our public safety team safer and more efficient, which will allow them to focus fully on our growing community’s public safety needs.”

Founded in 2007 by Neal and Jeanne Patterson, the Kansas City-based organization aims to reinvest in rural communities and strengthen organizations and projects that support rural needs. In 2021, the Foundation awarded $18.3 million dollars to rural-serving organizations or projects in the Kansas and western Missouri area.

The safety center renovation project began in the Spring of 2022, as City staff identified a need to improve both the interior and exterior areas of the Lindsborg Public Safety Center building, which was originally built in the mid-1980s. Among the improvements being addressed is making the building more secure and efficient for staff and residents, adding an enclosed interview room, new locker room, training room, additional office space, an evidence preparation room with expanded property and evidence storage capabilities, an eye wash/decontamination shower in the fire bay, and more.

“The Thriving Rural Grant looks for organizations, ideas, and solutions that show rural grit and promise,” said City Administrator Kristi Northcutt. “We’re so pleased those could be seen in this application.”

Funding for the project, which did not require any increase in taxes, is being split over the 2023 and 2024 City budget years to minimize financial impact. The project is expected to be completed in April of 2024.
