Football Bulldogs Fall to (RV) Southwestern in Season Finale

WINFIELD, Kan. (MacBulldogs.com) – The McPherson College Bulldogs dropped a heartbreaker Saturday (Nov. 11) 28-21 to Southwestern College in their season finale in Winfield, Kan.

The Bulldogs found themselves in a battle despite being outgained by over 200 yards. The Moundbuilders also had 20 more first downs and nearly 30 more offensive plays.

MC was forced to punt on the first drive of the game, but Avery Crawford recovered the muffed punt, giving the Bulldogs a short field. However, a 26-yard field goal by Jimmy Mai went wide right to keep the game scoreless.

The Moundbuilders then marched down the field in 14 plays, capped off by a 37-yard field goal.

Jalil Brown made it a 7-3 Bulldog lead with a four-yard touchdown, his third in the last two games, but the Builders answered on the next possession with a six-yard run by Jarious Burnett to put SC on top 9-7 with 26 seconds left in the half.

Southwestern added to their lead with a 34-yard field goal late in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs snatched the lead with a 12-play 70-yard drive that melted over 10 minutes off the clock to lead 14-12.

The Builders answered with a 39-yard touchdown pass from Braden Howell to Matthew Holthus, but Wyatt Smith found Traven Lewis-Johnson for a 62-yard bomb to give them a 21-20 advantage.

However, the Builders scored with just 29 seconds left in the game.

Brysen Kerby rushed for a team-high 62 yards on ten carries, while Brown added 35 yards and Smith finished with 31 yards on the ground and 123 yards passing. Defensively, Kobe Brown finished with 11 solo tackles, one sack, and a forced fumble.

The Bulldogs season comes to an end with a 5-6 record in head coach Jeremiah Fiscus‘s fifth season at the helm.
