SALINA, Kan. – Hutchinson High juniors Ellie Foos and Ayla Booe went 2-2 at the Class 5A state tennis tournament Friday and Saturday in Salina.

The duo was seeded 18th and opened the tournament with a win over the No. 15 seed from Lansing, 6-3, 6-1. The Salthawks were sent to the consolation bracket with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to the No. 2 seed from Topeka Seaman. Foos and Booe then went 1-1 in the consolation bracket, finishing just one win shy of a spot in the top 12.

Golf – Sophomore Lily Rodriguez was the only Salthawk to play in the 5A state tournament Monday at Carey Park Golf Course.

Rodriguez carded a 114 on the first day of the tournament. She finished in 68th place.

Volleyball – The Salthawks wrapped up the season Tuesday with a five-set loss at Maize, 25-23, 20-25, 22-25, 25-14, 15-12.

The Salthawks ended the regular season 9-23 with many losses coming in three sets (in best-of-three matches). They did not qualify for substate, as only the top 16 teams in 5A West qualify, and the Salthawks were 17th.

Soccer – The Salthawks continued an odd trend, as they have not won consecutive games, nor have they lost consecutive games all season. They did have one three-game unbeaten stretch with a tie sandwiched around two wins.

Thursday, the Salthawks had a strong opening and beat McPherson 3-0 at the Salthawk Sports Complex. Tuesday, they fell to the reigning Class 5A state champion, Maize South, 10-0.

Hutchinson will wrap up the regular season Thursday at Newton. The Salthawks can still finish anywhere from sixth to 11th in the 5A West regional standings. A top-eight finish guarantees a first-round regional home game next week.

Cross country – Sophomore Lalo Rodriguez continued his strong season by leading the Salthawks at the ACVTL Division 1 meet Saturday in Salina. He had the Salthawks’ best time, finishing 32nd in 18 minutes, 56.26 seconds. Senior Winston Johnson was right behind in 35th place in 19:14.16.

The race was run simultaneously as the AVCTL Division 2 meet, and the placements were figured together and not by division.

On the girls side, Avery Tecklenberg was the only varsity runner for Hutch, and she finished in 16th place (21:58.46)
