HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Sophomore Jayda Wyatt scored two goals to start a second-half scoring explosion as the No. 10-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team to their fifth-consecutive victory on Wednesday night at the Salthawk Sports Complex.
Tied 0-0 at halftime, the Blue Dragons had their biggest single offensive half in the final 45 minutes of the season in a 6-1 victory over the Coffeyville Red Ravens.
The Blue Dragons improve to 12-1-3 overall and 9-1-3 (30 points) in the Jayhawk Conference. The 10th-ranked Blue Dragons travel to No. 7 Barton at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Great Bend. Coffeyville is now 4-10-0 overall and 2-10-0 in the KJCCC.
Wyatt had her second multi-goal game of the season and earned her first career game-winning goal in her four-point game.
Kaitlyn Edwards and Adriana Delgado each had a goal and an assist. Delgado broke a four-game drought without a goal and Edwards has had a point in five-straight games.
Jessica Salkeld and Katharina Marx each scored goals. Emma Hoffman, Tatiana Mayumi and Maria Azevedo all had assists.
Blue Dragon goalkeeper Karsyn Slothower (12-1-3) finished with four saves. Now with 74 saves for the season, Slothower ranks second on the Blue Dragon freshman saves list and third on the single-season saves list. Her 12 season wins tie four others – Eunice Figueroa, Caroline Howard, Taylor Camp and Chiara Soergel – for fifth on the single-season wins list.
Hutchinson was playing into a gusty 20 mph wind into the first half and still out-shot Coffeyville 10-3. The Blue Dragons dodged a bullet when goalkeeper Karsyn Slothower made a huge save on a Red Raven breakaway to keep the game scoreless.
The Dragons continued to press the Ravens and finally broke through just 2:52 in second half. Wyatt took an Edwards pass and beat Coffeyville keeper Rosa Calabuig low and to her right for a 1-0 lead.
Wyatt scored her second goal of the game just 2:59 later when she hammered home a free kick from 20-yards out to give Hutchinson a 2-0 lead with 39:09 to play in the second half. Wyatt now has seven goals for the season.
The third and fourth Blue Dragon goals came just 1:28 apart.
Delgado scored her 13th goal of the season on a header from a perfect Emma Hoffman cross with 39:48 to play for a 3-0 lead. Delgado then returned the favor by assisting Salkeld on her first goal of the season, which gave the Dragons a 4-0 lead with 38:20 remaining.
Coffeyville broke the shutout in the 67th minute when Thayline Teixeira scored to cut the Dragon lead to 4-1. The Blue Dragons immediately answered 21 seconds later when Marx broke in and scored from a Mayumi assist for a 5-1 lead with 23:10 remaining.
The Dragons capped their six-goal second half when Edwards headed home an Azevedo corner for a 6-1 lead with 4:09 to play.
The Blue Dragons had a season-high 26 total shots, out-shooting Coffeyville 26-9. The Dragons scored off two of their seven corner kicks.
The Blue Dragons are now 16-5 all-time against Coffeyville.
