Buhler Sports Roundup: Tennis Qualifies 3 Entries for State

BUHLER, Kan. – Buhler tennis qualified three entries for State at Friday’s 4A Regional held at the Buck Balzer Tennis Courts in Buhler. The Crusaders totaled 10 points to finish in third place as a team, with McPherson finishing first and Chapman second.

In singles play, after falling to the consolation bracket in the semifinals, teammates Ashlyn Coker and Kayleigh Hamby found themselves facing off for fifth in the final match of the day. Coker would claim fifth and Hamby sixth.

The duo of Mady Tanksley and Faith Miller in doubles are also moving on in the postseason, finishing fourth. Haeleigh Ruiz and Jaiden Gillet just missed the cut after losing a marathon match to Clara Gfeller and Zoey Saum of Chapman.

State Tennis will be played on October 13 and 14 at the Vaughan Tennis Center in Winfield.

 

GOLF

It will be the Buhler golf team’s turn at regional play this coming Monday. The Crusaders will be one of 10 teams to compete at the Wamego Country Club in Wamego.

Buhler posted its third-highest team score of the year at league last Tuesday. A 386 posted the Crusaders fourth in the final standings behind Wellington, Winfield, and McPherson.

“I was pleased with our team finish,” said Head Coach Brennan Torgerson. “I observed some improvement in some areas we have been working on in practice.”

Marlie Cooper and Macy Miller shot an 88 and 93 respectively to place in eighth and ninth and earn first-team all-league honors. Brynlee Frank earned second-team honors, placing 14th with a score of 97.

SOCCER

Buhler Soccer went 2-0 this past week earning wins over Rose Hill and Wichita Classical. Tuesday’s 3-0 victory at Rose Hill saw Parker Freeman, AJ Thetford, and Jaylen Cherry contribute to the scoring.

“The boys won a big league contest against Rose Hill,” Head Coach Joshua Tafolla said.

Thursday, the Crusaders eked out a physical win over Wichita Classical, in which the Saints were issued two red cards. A Reuben Harder goal off an assist from AJ Thetford put Buhler up 1-0 in the first half. Midway through the second half, Von Woleslagel found the net off a free kick by Jaylen Cherry.

The Crusaders currently sit second in the 4-2-1A West Standings at 9-2 with five matches remaining, including three this upcoming week.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

Buhler cross country swept both the varsity and junior varsity races at Thursday’s Sterling Invitational. The Crusaders ran away with the varsity boys’ race, sweeping the top three and four of the top five positions. Gavin Lindahl posted a PR time of 16:12.4 to place first individually.

The varsity girls grouped six runners inside the top six to win their event over second-place Sterling. Corbin Starkweather led the pack in four with a PR time of 20:50.5.

“What a day for the XC Cru at the Sterling Invite,” Head Coach Curtis Morgan said. “Now it’s on to Championship Season next week as we head to our League Meets.”

League will be hosted by Wichita Collegiate on Thursday.

VOLLEYBALL

With the regular season nearing a close, Buhler volleyball earned two important wins at El Dorado on Saturday, sweeping Arkansas City and El Dorado. The Crusaders will be back on the court Tuesday at McPherson.
