MAIZE, Kan. – The Hutchinson Salthawks have steadied their season after a tough season-opening loss. They’ve done it at the right time too, with archrival Derby coming to town next week.

Terrell King had a monster game, catching five passes for 185 yards and three touchdowns and also intercepting two passes, as the Salthawks stormed back from an early double-digit deficit to beat Maize South 28-23 on Friday at Maize South.

The Salthawks grabbed an early 3-0 on a 29-yard field goal from Taysen Runyan. But Maize South answered with a pair of touchdowns and led 14-3 after one quarter.

The Salthawks cut into the deficit a bit by halftime on a Runyan 26-yard field goal, as they trailed 14-6.

Then, King took over. He had third-quarter touchdown catches, from Robert Hunter passes, measuring 62 and 80 yards, helping Hutchinson grab a 21-14 lead.

Maize South would get a safety to close to 21-16, but Hunter answered with a 26-yard touchdown pass to King.

Hunter finished with 215 passing yards, completing 9 of 16 passes.

Maize South’s vaunted offense was held to 194 yards and 12 first downs.

Hutchinson improves to 2-1 and has won two straight after a season-opening 7-3 loss to Goddard-Eisenhower.
