Transportation professionals, advocates and community members across Kansas are invited to attend the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Walk Bike Roll Kansas Active Transportation Summit taking place in McPherson from Sept. 20 to 22.
The three-day, in-person event will feature the newest Kansas Active Transportation Plan and launch a new model for the Safe Routes to School program in Kansas.
Sessions for the first two days are action-oriented and focus on creating connected and equitable communities that normalize walking, biking and rolling. Mobile workshops will also allow attendees to partake in group bike rides and walking tours of newly-constructed projects in McPherson. The half-day session on Sept. 22 will focus on planning, educating and programming Safe Routes to School projects, and the program’s new logo and website will be unveiled.
A few speakers at the event will include BikeWalkKC Policy Director Michael Kelley, who is the keynote speaker, and city and community leaders from Dodge City, Wichita and Salina.
“Many Kansans cannot or choose not to drive,” said Jenny Kramer, KDOT’s Active Transportation Manager. “Communities can improve the quality of life for all their residents by expanding transportation systems to include options for people to safely walk, bike and roll.”
