HutchCC Students Bring Home Awards from Media Contest

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Hutchinson Community College’s two student publications – The Hutchinson Collegian newspaper and Dragon’s Tale magazine – fared well in the annual Kansas Collegiate Media contest held April 16-17 in Wichita.

Overall, the publications combined for 72 individual awards in writing, photography, creative design and social media. Among those 72 awards included 18 first-place awards.

Ainsley Trunkhill, a Hutchinson High graduate and The Collegian’s Managing Editor for Content, was named Two-Year College Journalist of the Year. Trunkhill picked up five other awards, including a first-place win in Copy Editing, Profile Writing for a story on HutchCC student Felipe Oliveira Trautman, a Brazil native who had to purchaser a bicycle after landing in Wichita, and then ride it to Hutchinson, and also in Features Writing for a story on Tony Ballard, a man in prison for attempted murder who has used his time to take online classes at HutchCC and also help develop an internationally-recognized chess organization.

Trunkhill is an education major and plans to transfer to Kansas State after finishing her associate’s degree this spring.

Laci Sutton, a Nickerson graduation and the Fall 2022 Managing Editor for Content, was the Two-Year College Journalist of the Year runner-up. Sutton earned an associate’s degree in the fall in journalism and is finisher her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing through HutchCC’s co-op program with the University of Kansas.

The Dragon’s Tale staff at HutchCC is led by advisor Amber Brawner, Professor of Visual Media Design, while The Collegian staff advisor is Brad Hallier, Assistant Professor of Journalism.
