HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Donuts hold a special place in the history of The Salvation Army and for National Donut Day this year, the breakfast treat plays a special role in helping The Salvation Army of Reno County serve locally and around the world.
National Donut Day was created following the service of Salvation Army officers and volunteers who served on the front lines of World War I, providing assistance to soldiers. They wrote letters, served coffee, and fried up donuts in army helmets. Now, more than 100 years later, the annual Donut Day Eating Contest returns on Friday, June 2, 2023, at The Salvation Army Thrift Store at 200 South Main Street in Hutchinson. Not only will there be the entertainment of our local contestants, but there will be free donuts and coffee to begin your day.
“We’re not making donuts, but staff and volunteers are hard at work every day in Reno County, and National Donut Day is a great way to get the community involved in our work in a fun and tasty way,” Major Paul James said.
The Salvation Army provides Payee Services to 100 clients monthly, making sure clients pay their bills on time to stay in their homes. In April of last year, Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services responded following the Haven gas explosion helping with the evacuation. This past year The Salvation Army has been partnered with the local VOAD helping feed the many volunteers who helped with clean up, and helping families replace furniture and appliances. The Emergency Assistance program provided 295 families with financial help to pay rent and utility bills, and the Pathway of Hope program has assisted over 45 families since October 1.
This year, the Donut Day Eating Contest will help send Reno County kids to summer camp and aid Salvation Army units working around the world in 130 countries.
