HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Jordan Downing earned her first win as Hutchinson High girls soccer coach on Thursday, as the Salthawks rolled by Buhler 3-0 in the Reno County derby at the Salthawks Sports Complex.
Senior Libby Jackson opened the scoring for the Salthawks, and second-half goals from freshmen Ryhan Galyon and Keyla Fernandez wrapped up their second straight win over Buhler. Jackson and Galyon added assists.
The Salthawks bounced back nicely from a season-opening 6-2 loss to Class 5A power Goddard-Eisenhower, which features University of Tennessee commit Bella Smith.
The Salthawks will play three games this week in the annual Titan Classic at Wichita South High School.
Track and field – On a chilly Friday night in Newton, school records fell.
Senior Annalisa Cullens continued the great history of Salthawk hurdlers by breaking school records in both the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles.
Cullens set the record in the 100 hurdles in a time of 14.3 seconds, and then broke the 300 hurdles mark in 45.67 seconds. Cullens also won the 100 and 200,
Junior Azariah Dawes won the long jump with a winning leap of 16 feet, 8 1/2 inches. Senior Aiyanna Green won the shot put and was second in the discuss.
On the boys side, senior Grady Bare won the shot put and discuss, while the Salthawks did well in the long jump, as senior Gabe Eye took second, sophomore Quentin Loveless third and sophomore Terrell King fourth.
Girls swimming – Lilly Krohlow qualified for the Class 5A state meet in the 100-yard backstroke, while AJ Gooch earned state consideration in the 100 breaststroke.
The Salthawks competed well in the six-team Thursday at Salina South. While the Salthawks finished fifth with 329 points, they had the smallest squad there and were just 32 points behind third-place Salina Central.
