MCPHERSON, Kan. – “Thunder and Thunder” is the nickname that Coach Pavlovich has for his Bullpup running backs, Dawson Gottwald and Jaytin Gumm, as the run-game was on display from the opening snap of Friday’s AVCTL Div III contest, as MHS hosted the Circle Thunderbirds.
On the very first play from scrimmage, Hunter Alvord would take the snap 59 yards into the endzone, giving the Pups a 7-0 lead. From there it was Jaytin Gumm, who finished the night with 4 touchdowns.
The Pups were threatened before the half, as the Thunderbirds found the endzone, and later a high snap would go over punter Blaise Hoover’s head, and into the endzone for a safety. The Bullpups would go into the locker room leading 14-9, but Circle had momentum and looked to build on that in the second half.
The MHS defense forced the Thunderbirds to punt after their first three plays of the third quarter, and on the Bullpups’ next possession, Jaytin Gumm was able to break lose for a 59-yard touchdown. Later, he would end the third quarter with a 14-yard touchdown. Gumm would end the night with a 29-yard touchdown run, as it was all Bullpups in the second half, as they would go on to win 35-15.
“Our top two tailbacks are amazing,” said Pavlovich, who mentioned even down the line, the depth at running back has been a luxury. “We’re pretty blessed with some tailbacks, and the guys up front did a great job.”
Defensively, Pavlovich credited the Circle offense, who was led by Cooper Chadwell at quarterback saying, “He’s a good quarterback, and they’ve got some really good receivers.” This is a pretty dangerous team, and this is a good win against a good football team,” said Coach Pavlovich, who concluded by saying, “ It’s not the same ol’ Circle anymore.”
Following the win, the Pups move to 3-1 overall, and they will be back on the road for their next two contests. Next week they will travel to Winfield to take on the 0-4 Vikings, before making the trip to Wellington the following Friday.
