Warriors Get Their First Win of the New Year

STERLING, Kan. (SCWarriors.com) – Sterling got their first win of the new year in the Gleason Center with a dominant first half performance over the York University Panthers, coming away with an 86-74 victory.

The Warriors came out hot in the first half, shooting over 55% from the field, including 47% from beyond the arc. Jayden Garrison and Damond Daniels were instrumental to the Warriors offense scoring 15 and 14 points through the first half, respectively. Helping the Warriors take a 53-29 lead to the first half.

York would not go away quietly, coming out in the second half of play and shooting 50% from the field to outscore Sterling 45-33. However, the Warriors were able to keep the Panthers at bay with key finishes at the rim by Jimmy Causey Jr. and Javion Reed. Monem Abboud also kept the Warriors alive with two big three balls in the final frame.

Garrison finished the night leading all scorers with 22 points and contributing three assists. Daniels had a game high five assists while putting up 16 points of his own.

Defensively, Mooch Austin proved to be a pest with more steals by himself, four, than then entire York defense, two. Austin also scored 11 points and dished out three assists.

Causey Jr. led the Warriors with rebounds nine and contributed nine points, two steals and two assists on the day.

The Warriors (5-5, 10-6) will travel to Lindsborg, Kan. to take on the Bethany College Swedes (3-6, 6-8) on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 8 p.m.
