Volleyball Dragons Drop Five-Set KJCCC Match at Garden City

GARDEN CITY, Kan. (BlueDragonSports.com) – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team closed their 15-match road trip to start the season on Wednesday, dropping a five-set battle with Garden City in a KJCCC contest at Conestoga Arena.

The Blue Dragons trailed 2-1, dominated the fourth set, but ultimately lost to the Broncbusters 25-20, 25-27, 15-25, 25-19, 15-10.

Hutchinson is now 8-7 overall and 1-2 in the KJCCC. The Blue Dragons have the weekend off and will play its 2024 home opener next Wednesday against Cloud County at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons trailed 16-12 in the opening set and rallied to claim the first set. The Dragons then opened a six-point lead in the second set only to see the Busters go on a 9-1 run to even the match with a deuce-set victory in extra point. After Garden City owned the third set and Hutchinson the fourth, the fifth set was tied at 3-3 before Garden City used a 3-0 run to take command.

The Blue Dragons are now 2-1 in five-set matches this season.

Freshman outside hitter Atlyn Proctor had 18 kills to lead the Blue Dragons. Freshman outside hitter Viktoria Graf had 11 kills, one block assist, eight digs and two service aces. Sophomore right-side hitter Tiana Simmons had nine kills.

Freshman setter Ellie Suber finished with 20 assists. Sophomore setter Shelbi Wilson had 18 assists.

Defensively, freshman Addy Foster finished with 18 digs. Foster added two ace serves. Freshman defensive specialist Siani Sanchez had 10 digs.

At the net, sophomore middle McKenzie Murphy had five total blocks. Sophomore middle Precious Johnson had three blocks.

Julia Braziel had 20 kills to lead Garden City.
