Volleyball Swedes Split Home Opener Tri

Lindsborg, Kan. (BethanySwedes.com) – Bethany College hosted the Calvary University Warriors and the Oklahoma Panhandle State University Aggies for their home opener triangular match Tuesday, August 20th in Hahn Gymnasium. The Swedes kicked off the day taking on the Warriors in an exciting 4 set match which resulted in a Swede win, the first of the season under new Head Coach Ayona Tharps.

BOX SCORE VS. OKLAHOMA PANHANDLE STATE

Set 1: After a couple points back and forth, the Swedes took the lead and extended it to a 5-point run, 9-4. The Warriors would regroup and tie the set at 14-14. From there, Bethany once again took the momentum and ran to lead by 3, 18-15. Calvary would chip away at the lead to tie the score at 19-19.  The final points of the set were a constant of back and forth ultimately ending in a 24-26 loss for the Swedes.

Set 2: Bethany rallied the troops in the second set leading 9-2. The Warriors tried but weren’t able to break the Swedes’ momentum who led the entire set. Score was 25-17 in favor of Bethany who now tied Calvary in sets won at 1-1 forcing both teams to a 4th set.

Set 3: Similar to set 2, the Swedes found their footing early and dictated the tempo for the majority of the third set. Bethany as a whole had 14 kills, 4 errors on 38 attempts, earning a .263 hitting percentage. Final score was 25-18 in favor of the Swedes who now lead in number of sets won, 2-1.

Set 4: Final set of the match would result in the Swedes hitting their best percentage of the day at .275 with 15 kills, 4 errors on 40 attempts. Bethany would dominate the floor with a fast-paced offense and would keep the Warriors under 15 points. Final score of the game was 25-14.

Notable Stats from this game include 12 kills by Autry Satica who was hitting a .458, 3 blocks by Melia Coleman, 30 digs by Michelle Acevedo Ortiz, and 22 assists by Mandy Knipp.

Following the Calvary match, the Swedes took on the OPSU Aggies, seeking revenge from last year’s devasting 2-point loss in the 5th set on the road. Unfortunately for the Swedes, this game would end in a loss after 4 sets of battling, 21-25, 25-14, 18-25, and 11-25.

Notable stats from this game include 9 kills by Autry Satica, 1 block by Madison McGuire who hit a .231, 33 digs by Michelle Acevedo Ortiz, and 15 assists by Katherine Voss.

Up next, the Swedes are on the road at Peru State College this Saturday, Aug. 24th for a triangular match against Peru State and Waldorf University, starting at 2pm.
