HILLSBORO, Kan. (TaborBluejays.com) – First-year Tabor College Men’s Basketball Head Coach Josh Roach has announced the addition of Mike Gombos to his staff.

“I am appreciative of the college, President Dr. David Janzen, Director of Athletics Jeff Brewer, and Coach Josh Roach for giving me this opportunity”, Gombos remarked.

“I’m really looking forward to bringing some hardware back to Tabor.”

Coach Gombos makes his way to Hillsboro from Northwood University in Midland, Mich., where he served as an assistant on the Men’s Basketball staff there during the 2023-24 season. While at Northwood, Gombos helped coach and develop Second Team All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference selection, Collin Albert.

Prior to his time at Northwood, Gombos served as a Graduate Assistant Coach at William Woods University in Fulton, Mo. under then-Head Coach Charles Belt. With the help of Gombos, the Owls posted records of 18-14 (2021-22) and 15-13 (2022-23) and earned trips to the semifinals of the American Midwest Conference (AMC) tournament both seasons. Gombos coached two First Team All-AMC selections during his time in Fulton, as well as two Second Team selections, one Third Team selections, and two Honorable Mention selections. Coach Gombos also contributed to the development of back-to-back AMC Defensive Player of the Year, Darius Yohe.

Coach Gombos spent time as a Volunteer Assistant Coach at two respected junior college programs in USC Salkehatchie in Walterboro, S.C. and Grand Rapids Community College in Grand Rapids, Mich., spending a year with each program.

With a feel for the college game at three different levels, Mike brings a unique skill set to the Bluejay Men’s Basketball staff.

Originally from Troy, Mich., Gombos earned his bachelor’s degree in communications with an emphasis in advertising and public relation from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich., and earned his master’s degree in athletic administration from William Woods University.

“We are very excited to have Coach Gombos on board here at Tabor College”, said Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Josh Roach.

“Mike’s passion for investing in people and helping them grow is right in line with what we want to establish here at Tabor. He is going to be a fantastic coach and mentor for our program.”
