Monarchs bombard Newton, win fifth straight

Camden Johnson had two hits and four RBIs, Jadon Gustafson added three hits, and the Hutchinson Monarchs made quick work of the Newton Rebels on Wednesday at Hobart-Detter Field, winning 15-2.

The win was the Monarchs’ fifth straight and they remained on top of the Jayhawk Collegiate League standings at 19-7.

The game ended after seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

The Monarchs didn’t waste much time in taking the lead, scoring eight times in the second inning. Zerick Warren’s two-run double gave the Monarchs a 2-0 lead. Johnson added an RBI single, and Austin Coyle later had another two-run double. Thirteen Monarchs batted in the inning.

Jaden Gustafson had another RBI double in the third inning, and Johnson added a sacrifice fly, increasing the lead to 10-0. The Monarchs polished off the win with a five-run sixth inning.

Brock Rod was the winning pitcher for the Monarchs, as he threw five solid innings, giving one unearned run on one hit. He also struck out eight. Camden Cornelius pitched the final two innings, giving up one run on one hit while striking out three.
