The Hutchinson Monarchs’ bats went wild on Monday at Hobart-Detter Field, as they had 25 hits, including 12 extra-base hits, and scored a season-high in runs in beating the Wichita Black Sox 25-3 in non-league action.
It was already the fifth time this season the Monarchs scored in double figures, and the second time in three games they’ve scored at least 21 runs.
Colin Cybalista continued his torrid start to the season, going 4 for 5 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Cymalista is now batting .625. Brett Smajstrla Also had a big night, going 5 for 6 with two triples, a double, five runs scored and five RBIs. Smajstrla finished with 10 total bases.
The Monarchs smacked three home runs, from DJ Merriweather, Austin Coyle and Nicky Sackett.
The Monarchs opened up the game in the bottom of the third inning. Leading 3-1, the Monarchs scored four runs, and then added eight in the fourth inning, five in the fifth and five more in the sixth.
Garrett Folmar was the winning pitcher, throwing three shutout innings in relief. He gave up one hit and struck out two.
The Monarchs improved to 8-3 and will return to league play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hobart-Detter Field against the Kansas Cannons.
